Valentine’s Day conjures up all types of feelings. People will experience emotions ranging from love and anticipation to anger and betrayal. What does your Valentine’s Day bring you this year? This year, Valentine’s Day arrives on a Tuesday.
I, for one (my Valentine is still searching for me) can’t resist the urge to have a party for any occasion. More importantly, I believe every kind of love is a cause for celebration on this holiday. Why not focus not only the romantic kind of love, but also the really deep kind that comes from your family, friends and your kids? I believe it is the best way to celebrate Valentine’s Day.
Now, a restaurant is always a good time, but this Valentine’s Day we have decided to forgo the extra restaurant surcharge and have a celebration of love at home. We all are going to the Pacific Palisades, just down the road from Malibu (for my out of town readers).
My job is to make my famous crab cakes. I am getting the kids involved and we are taking them on the road. I initially thought to myself, “Are crab cakes really a Valentine’s Day food?” I always try to bring the sea into the menu, but was worried they wouldn’t fit the holiday. So I have added a twist! I am making Heart Shaped Crab Cakes with a bit of red cocktail sauce (think my bleeding heart) and tartar sauce for those hearts that are still in one piece. Will I be cheating if I mix the sauces? My daughter says it’s a little cheesy, but why not have some fun?!
We will have a Valentine’s celebration that includes some champagne, a little crab, and the people who REALLY love you… not a bad plan! Who knows, my Valentine may even find his way to the party.
