The weather is warming up and it’s time to freshen up the beach house to be ready for your friends and family. Here are 5 simple tips for a quick summer makeover!
1. Simple Furniture Fixes
I like starting from the bottom up… Are your sofas looking tired? Fresh slipcovers are an easy way to give a room a brand new look. I prefer using easy white linen or denim that can be bleached and look great for the whole summer. (Make sure the fabric is prewashed before it is sewn). Adding some sea inspired pillows renew the look of the sofas and bring in some up to date colors.
2. Accent Pieces
Summer place mats and napkins are another easy way to give your table a fresh new look. This year we’re seeing a trend of bright colors like lime green, hot pink and yellow but if you have colorful dishes you may want to stick to my favorites white and grey. Add a fun napkin ring and you have a brand new table. This year I’m also throwing out my old mish mash of cups and replacing them with some oversized mugs – mothing is better than a large cup of coffee to sit and watch the seagulls play!
But my absolute favorite this year are the new incredible permanent orchids that when mixed with fresh flowers really say welcome to the beach. You can leave the beach house and not worry about heat or water. It’s all about making it beach easy!
A great tip to quickly update the overall look of your home is to take a good look at the art you have hanging at the beach. There are so many great art shows in Malibu and the surrounding areas. I often enjoy taking my clients on a day-trip to Santa Barbara to shop for new art. Abstract pieces mix well with Beach homes whether it is cottage or contemporary( and p.s… it doesn’t have be expensive!)
Time for a closet cleanup! You know what I’m talking about…. Do you really still need that inner tube? Some summer time sachets hung in each closet with new hangers will make any bedroom feel fresh and clean.
The best feeling at a hotel are the crisp linens you dive into. Why not create that feeling at the beach house – the place where you come to relax and renew? I like sticking with classic white, it’s easy and low maintenance. A cotton white coverlet and freshly laundered sheets relaxes anyone. Remember to use phosphate free detergent – the best scents come from the fresh air off the sea, not the detergent ! I like using J.R. Watkins brand which is really gentle but still gets it clean.
Don’t forget your outdoor rooms, that’s where we send most of summer in Malibu! Think beyond traditional, these days there are so many great pieces to really make another living area . Outdoor rugs define your space, whether you add it under the table or the sofa, or both, it creates a cozy feel. Hurricane lanterns hung from trees or on tables give a warm glow as the sun sets. Keep lots of candles, and matches on hand for those long nights with friends & family. I love the new outdoor non-glass glasses, if you have kids around you don’t have to worry about potential broken glass around bare feet.
Lastly, load up the house with books to enlighten, inspire and enjoy. Your guests will feel pampered and loved. And you will be ready to relax with them
Happy Summer and remember … Live life with the doors wide open!
